Fires in Kyiv region: Radiation levels normal, no public health threat

Despite ongoing fires in the Kyiv region, including the exclusion zone and Brovary district where peat fires are burning, there has been no significant increase in air pollution, and radiation levels remain normal, according to officials.

Oleksandr Khorunzhyi, press officer for the State Emergency Service, provided the update during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.

“Currently, peat is burning in several locations near the village of Pukhivka in the Brovary district, covering approximately 15 hectares. In the past 24 hours, firefighters have extinguished over 7 hectares, with about 8 to 8.4 hectares still to be contained. Around 100 firefighters and over 100 pieces of equipment are engaged in the effort,” Khorunzhyi reported. “Additionally, there is a fire in the exclusion zone, which has spread across more than 420 hectares. Over 200 rescuers and around 50 pieces of equipment are working to control it. The radiation levels are being continuously monitored and are currently normal.”

Overall, the smoke from these fires does not pose a threat to the health of residents in Kyiv and the surrounding areas. However, Khorunzhyi cautioned that the smoke could be harmful to individuals with asthma.
