EU recognizes Ukraine as a low-risk timber exporter, easing trade with the bloc
The European Commission has officially designated Ukraine a low-risk timber exporting country, a recognition that ranks it among top-tier exporters like Germany, Denmark, and Austria.
Viktor Smal, Head of the State Forest Resources Agency of Ukraine, announced the decision during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine.
“Just a month ago, Ukraine was granted the status of a low-risk timber exporter. This is the highest classification available, and we are on a par with such countries as Denmark, Germany, and Austria. It significantly simplifies export procedures for Ukrainian businesses while also reducing the compliance burden for EU operators,” Smal said.
He noted that the European Commission’s decision was based on several key criteria, including Ukraine’s institutional capacity, advances in digital transparency and traceability tools implemented in the forestry sector, and sustainable forest management practices.
