Due to border blockade freight traffic decreases tenfold – Andrii Demchenko
As of the morning of Monday, December 4, about 2,500 trucks are stuck in line at four border checkpoints on their way from Poland to Ukraine. The largest number of trucks, mainly 900 of them, is near the Rava-Ruska checkpoint. In general, the protestors’ blocking the border resulted in a significant decrease in freight traffic, sometimes tenfold.
Andrii Demchenko, Spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, made this statement during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.
“Of course, we observe that a certain number of vehicles still cross the border both to leave and enter Poland. But the traffic is not even close to what it was before November 6. For example, the Yahodyn checkpoint, which is actually the direction where earlier, by agreement with the Polish side, a decision was made to allow only freight transport to pass through, the passenger traffic was redirected to other checkpoints. This is a large infrastructural facility where about 1,200-1,300 trucks used to cross the border per day in both directions. Over the past day, about 130 vehicles crossed the border there. That is, a significant decrease in freight traffic,” Andrii Demchenko noted.
According to Andrii Demchenko, a significant decrease in the freight traffic can also be observed at the Rava-Ruska checkpoint – about 150 vehicles crossed the border over the day in both directions, whereas about 600 trucks used to cross the border per day in this direction before the blockade.
However, he also added that somewhat heavy traffic still remains at the Krakivets checkpoint, although it is also reduced in comparison to pre-November 6 numbers.
