Banks must show the world that Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and other cities are not a no-man’s-land; they are territories under Ukraine’s control where people live and work – Eastern Europe

Civil society representatives are calling on banks to review their policies regarding operations in frontline cities. This was stated by Volodymyr Kupriy, Senior Monitoring and Evaluation Manager at the Eastern Europe Foundation, during a briefing at the Ukraine Media Center.

“People live in Kherson. It is not a dead zone. There are plenty of hubs underground, hospitals are operating—it’s not a dead zone. There are plenty of civil society and charitable organizations there. I hope NBU staff are monitoring the information space. Dear banking regulator, please take note of this—it’s possible to apply the same standards to CSOs as to sole proprietorships. Oversight is necessary. However, you are forcing them to perform miracles of adaptability when we formally operate in Kherson but are forced to register in Cherkasy because the banking regulator does not allow us to conduct business transparently,” he stated.

Volodymyr Kupriy called on banks to review their policies and adapt to the external environment: “Zaporizhzhia is not occupied, Kherson is not occupied. Banks around the world need to know that this is territory under Ukraine’s control.”
