As of early August, 25 people drowned in Odesa region

Despite the official ban on swimming due to the mine danger and the undermining of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station dam. Serhiy Gotko, director of the regional department for civil protection, said this at a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine – Odesa.

He noted that currently in Odesa region it is forbidden for people to stay in beach areas, restrictions on the movement of citizens and vehicles within the coastal zone of the Black Sea have been established.

“However, despite the warnings and the ban on swimming due to the danger of mines and infectious diseases, the number of deaths on water bodies has only increased. As of August 3, 2023, 25 people have already died, 21 men and two women.  Among the dead are two boys. 10 people died in July. Last year, 20 people died over the same period, including two children,” – the official said.

He added that 3 people died at sea, 7 in rivers, and 15 in closed water bodies.

The official noted that the main causes of deaths are careless behavior on water bodies, neglect of personal safety while swimming in prohibited areas, and swimming while drunk.
