Winter to challenge Ukraine as russia targets energy infrastructure, willing to terrorize the nation, says Katarina Maternova
Ukraine faces a difficult winter as russia continues its campaign against civilian populations and critical infrastructure, Ambassador of the European Union to Ukraine Katarina Maternova said during an extraordinary session of the Kyiv Security Forum, which focused on the country’s energy sector and economic outlook for 2026.
“I think we are facing a very difficult situation in Ukraine. The russians are not only waging a war – they are really terrorizing the population by systematically attacking electricity nodes, gas production, and gas distribution. I expect the winter will still be difficult because as of today, people in Kyiv have daily blackouts for a number of hours. I think that the russians know what they are doing. They want to really terrorize Ukraine and Ukrainians,” the EU ambassador emphasized.
