Ukrainians should prepare for summer blackouts – Oleksandr Kharchenko
In summer, Ukrainians will likely face blackouts and restrictions on electricity consumption, said Oleksandr Kharchenko, Director at the Energy Industry Research Center, during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.
“Unfortunately, we have blackouts even now, and I predict that we need to prepare. Ukrainians need to remember their experiences, remember where their power banks are, keep track of their battery levels, and be prepared for the fact that there will be blackouts, certain restrictions,” he noted.
According to him, power outages are possible in the second half of July and in August, coinciding with the summer peak of electricity consumption.
“Right now, we’re fortunate that we’re experiencing the lower peak of spring consumption, because that’s when consumption is traditionally pretty low. And at the same time, hydropower can work at full capacity – as there is a lot of water. Everything is quite favorable now. In summer, unfortunately, the situation will change. We expect the summer consumption peak to occur in the second half of July, in August. And even with maximum imports (of electricity – Ed.), it is very difficult to predict the extent of the shortage in the energy system at that time,” Oleksandr Kharchenko explained.
