Ukrainian World Congress: Opening of Ukrainian embassies in Africa – A crucial step to overcome information isolation

Ukraine has taken a significant step to strengthen its presence on the African continent by opening nine new embassies in the region. This move is critical for improving communication and fostering a deeper understanding of Ukraine among African nations.

Dzvinka Kachur, representative of the Ukrainian World Congress in Africa made this statement during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine.

“Ukraine has made an important decision by opening nine additional embassies. A country’s diplomatic presence plays an extremely important role in communication. Media outlets can now reach out directly for official commentary, greatly enhancing opportunities for dialogue,” Kachur emphasized.

Kachur emphasized that Ukrainians are virtually unrepresented in many African countries, which makes it difficult to build an objective image of Ukraine.

“One of the major challenges is that Ukrainians are virtually absent. This means the average resident of South Africa or Zimbabwe has no idea what Ukrainians look like, what they eat for breakfast, or how they dress. Ukraine remains terra incognita to them. This vacuum allows harmful narratives to thrive, especially since Africans have never encountered or communicated with Ukrainians — or, when they did, those were Soviet people. Now, they seem to be different. Therefore, establishing embassies and maintaining ongoing outreach efforts are undoubtedly major achievements,” she stated.

Kachur also stressed the importance of direct engagement and of understanding Africa’s cultural diversity.

“Beyond diplomacy, fostering direct connections is essential. Ukrainians must recognize that Africa comprises 54 unique countries, each with its own cultural context and nuances. When we say ‘Africa,’ we cannot generalize. These nations differ vastly, and our approach must reflect that understanding,” she added.
