Ukrainian scientists identify “lost connection” syndrome in children, a global first

Ukrainian psychologists have identified a previously unrecognized phenomenon in children, now termed “lost connection syndrome,” marking a first in international scientific research.

Yanina Omelchenko, Acting Head of the Laboratory of Consultative Psychology and Psychotherapy at the H.S. Kostiuk Institute of Psychology of the National Academy of Educational Sciences of Ukraine, a Candidate of Psychological Sciences, presented the findings at the Media Center Ukraine.

“This is a condition that children experience both as a consequence of war and under the ideological influence of the aggressor country. We have developed this concept in depth at both the theoretical and methodological levels. The concept is well-grounded and displays clear, identifiable characteristics,” she explained.

According to Omelchenko, the syndrome describes a child’s disconnection from their inner world as a result of trauma. Affected children may feel alienated from their surroundings and lose touch with their cultural roots, fundamentally altering how they relate to themselves and the world around them.
