Ukrainian lawmakers to review bill aiming to expand drug access for patients with severe illnesses – NHSU Chief

Ukraine is moving to scale up the availability of medications for patients with severe health conditions through a combination of legislative efforts and international cooperation, according to Natalia Husak, head of the National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU).

Speaking at the Media Center Ukraine, Husak noted that steps are being taken to boost government procurement of critical treatments.

“The needs of patients with serious illnesses are covered by medicines procured by the Ministry of Health. Shortly, the Verkhovna Rada will consider a draft law that will provide funds for medicines to increase the volume of procurement of such drugs,” Husak said.

She added that during a recent Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome, the Ministry of Health signed a separate agreement with a pharmaceutical manufacturer. In parallel, several legislative changes have been adopted to enable the use of managed access agreements, mechanisms that allow for the purchase of high-cost medications under specific conditions, for patients with serious diseases.
