Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center explains whether military operations affect climate change
Local factors cannot influence powerful climate processes in a meaningful way. However, hostilities in Ukraine may be seen as one of the additional factors influencing weather conditions, but currently this influence is not estimated as very high.
Natalia Ptukha, Spokesperson of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, made this statement during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine.
“We know that the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Institute is conducting certain research in this direction – specifically on the impact of war and hostilities on certain weather factors – such a connection, such a correlation, of course, is being investigated. But to outright say that it has a direct impact now is very difficult, especially for us as weather forecasters. The scales are slightly different, that is, these global scales of movement of air masses are very powerful synoptic processes, and local manifestations cannot affect them so strongly. Of course, they can make a certain impact, but to bring about a global change and say that this is one of the reasons – no. This is, perhaps, one of additional factors, but its influence has not been estimated as very high so far,” Natalia Ptukha explained.
