Ukraine urges clear, structured aid requests to international partners amid energy crunch, expert says

Ukraine’s energy sector faces mounting pressure this winter, and timely delivery of partner-supplied generators could provide some relief before the next cold wave hits. But the country must urgently rebuild its depleted equipment reserves, which currently stand at zero.

Oleksandr Kharchenko, director of the Energy Industry Research Center, laid out the challenges during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine.

“Cooperation with partners needs to include several key elements. The first is a clear and structured request from the Ukrainian side, specifying exactly what’s needed and how best to deliver it. Right now, we need fast-track mechanisms to get this assistance in place. There’s also a real lack of coordination between municipal authorities, national energy companies, and our international partners,” he said.

Kharchenko stressed the need to better align donor requests under the current strained conditions.

“With things as they are, we’ll manage to get through to spring, and the pressure should ease then,” he added. “But unless we restore the networks, generation capacity, and urban support systems, next winter will be just as tough, or worse, even without attacks.”
