Ukraine thwarts russia’s assault groups, preventing border breach in the Sumy region – Andrii Demchenko

Ukrainian forces have repelled enemy assault groups attempting to breach the border in the Sumy region, preventing them from advancing deeper into Ukrainian territory, according to Andrii Demchenko, spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

Speaking at a briefing at Media Center Ukraine, Demchenko addressed recent reports of a supposed breakthrough by russian forces and their significant advance. He dismissed these claims as inaccurate, clarifying that while enemy attempts to enter Ukraine persist, they have been consistently countered.

“In the Sumy region, attention is focused on the area where the Ukrainian Defense Forces are conducting operations near the Kursk region. Reports suggesting the russians have broken through and advanced deep into Ukrainian territory are somewhat misleading,” Demchenko said. “The enemy has previously attempted and continues to attempt incursions, aiming to improve its tactical position for assaults on our positions. They may also be seeking to encircle our forces in the Kursk region or disrupt our supply lines.”

According to Demchenko, russian forces are concentrating their efforts in two key areas—near the settlements of Novenkoye and Zhuravka.

“This is essentially the left flank of the border relative to our operations in the Kursk region,” he explained. “In the Zhuravka direction, the enemy even deployed convoys of vehicles at one point, advancing toward our border in an attempt to break through. However, these convoys were destroyed by Ukraine’s Defense Forces—units of the State Border Guard Service and the Armed Forces. The enemy failed there but continues using small assault groups to infiltrate our territory.”

Demchenko noted that in recent days, russian forces have intensified their use of assault groups near Novenkoye. Their objective is to push as far into Ukrainian territory as possible, consolidate their position, and later expand the combat zone once reinforcements arrive.

“But every group that enters Ukraine is eliminated by our soldiers,” he stressed. “We are employing artillery and unmanned aerial vehicles to prevent the enemy from securing any foothold.”

He also recalled that Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief has assessed the situation and confirmed that, at present, there are no conditions for a complete severance of Ukrainian logistics routes.
