Ukraine set to launch compensation commission to address war damages caused by russia
Ukraine is preparing to launch a compensation commission that will assess claims for damages inflicted by russia on Ukrainian citizens, according to Olha Kuryshko, Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
The commission, which will review claims submitted to the Register of Damage for Ukraine, is expected to begin work in 2026. The Register itself has been operating since 2023. Efforts are underway to finalize the charter of the Compensation Commission, established under the auspices of the Council of Europe, which will determine the amount of compensation to be granted.
“Right now, a historic moment is taking place – the launch of the compensation commission,” Kuryshko said during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine. “It’s important that this effort considers not only the events of 2022 but also those of 2014. We need to maintain communication with our partners and the public about what types of compensation can be claimed.”
Kuryshko emphasized that victims living in third countries are also eligible to submit information about their losses to the Register of Damage for Ukraine.
