Ukraine sees drop in illegal border crossings, says State Border Guard Service
The number of illegal border crossing attempts in Ukraine has significantly decreased since August.
During a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine, Andrii Demchenko, spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service, highlighted the following. “The majority of illegal border crossings occur outside of officially designated checkpoints, typically along unmonitored remote border areas. The most active sections for such attempts remain the borders with Romania and Moldova, while far fewer cases are observed along the borders with Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland. Although crossings do happen in these areas, they are significantly less frequent compared to the first two. However, since August, we’ve observed a marked decline in the number of attempts, which is a significant change in terms of volume.” Demchenko went on to say that worsening weather conditions are also a deterrent. “It’s already snowing in the mountains, and the border line is covered in snow. Rain and worsening conditions are likely to further discourage illegal crossings in the coming months,” he added.
