Ukraine’s State Emergency Service expands role, training rescue officers to handle explosive threats

The State Emergency Service (SES) of Ukraine has broadened its personnel’s responsibilities to help them adapt to wartime conditions.

Viktor Vitovetskyi, director of the SES Department for Organization of Civil Protection Measures, announced the changes during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.

“SES officers who were already part of the system have gained new expertise,” Vitovetskyi said. “They have been trained in non-technical demining, which allows them to respond to public reports of potential threats and at least determine whether an explosive hazard is present.”

He explained that rescue officers summon a specialized pyrotechnic unit to conduct a full inspection and disposal if a situation appears more complex. In addition to spotting explosive risks, the officers are now able to identify potential radiological threats, Vitovetskyi added.
