Ukraine’s power grid remain largely unprotected, expert warns

russia has intensified strikes on Ukraine’s power transmission and distribution lines, which remain largely unprotected, Oleksandr Kharchenko, director of the Energy Industry Research Center, said during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine.

“Such attacks give russia a much greater advantage than strikes on high-voltage transmission systems,” Kharchenko noted. “Most distribution facilities have virtually no protection. If we exclude Kharkiv, where many are shielded, the rest of the regions are essentially exposed.”

He added that it would be impossible to build proper defenses within two or three months, saying that construction work could only begin in the spring.
