Ukraine’s Mentorship Law Has Taken Effect: You Can Become a Mentor to a Child Aged 10 or Older
The newly adopted Mentorship Law allows individuals to become mentors not only to orphans and children deprived of parental care, but also to other categories of children living in residential care facilities. The law provides for two forms of guardianship: individual and corporate. Kyrylo Nevdokha, head of the “DIiMO” Office for Children and Youth, spoke about this at the Ukraine Media Center.
“There are many children in residential care facilities who do not have the status of an orphan or a child deprived of parental care. In fact, they grow up there for years without parents and without support. This Law also addresses this issue. Now there is an opportunity to find a mentor for them. An individual mentor can care for several children, provided that time is devoted to each one. Corporate mentoring is an opportunity for businesses and enterprises not to visit children in residential care facilities just once a year, but to provide regular support, including career guidance,” he said.
The law also specifies the age range for mentoring. An individual mentor can be assigned when a child is between 10 and 23 years old, and a corporate mentor when the child is between 14 and 23 years old. The new law also introduces a social service for organizing mentoring and expands the range of individuals eligible for mentoring.
