Ukraine’s high-voltage networks to take weeks to restore after recent russian strikes
Ukraine’s energy infrastructure has suffered major damage, with restoration of high-voltage transmission networks expected to take 10 to 12 weeks, officials say.
Oleksandr Kharchenko, director of the Energy Industry Research Center, outlined the situation during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine, noting that while the energy sector will see noticeable improvement in the next three to four days, a full recovery will take months.
“We are currently in the initial phase of restoring high-voltage networks. Two quite substantial attacks have occurred. On the one hand, we are confident that where protective measures exist, the situation is much better. Unfortunately, such measures are not in place everywhere. There are significant equipment losses, especially where there was no protection,” Kharchenko said.
He explained that during massive attacks, protective systems shield key components but cannot cover entire substations. The use of cluster munitions also necessitates mine clearance before repair crews can safely begin restoration work.
