Ukraine’s distributed power projects expected to add 600-800 MW by year-end, says Yurii Boiko
Ukraine may commission between 600 to 800 megawatts (MW) of distributed generation of electricity by the end of this year, according to Yurii Boiko, Advisor to the Prime Minister and a member of Ukrenergo’s Supervisory Board.
Boiko shared the projection at a recent briefing hosted by the Media Center Ukraine.
“The timeline for implementing distributed generation projects is notably longer than constructing large, system-forming power stations,” he explained. “This isn’t a process that can be completed in a day, a week, or even a month. However, by this winter, these projects will offer a crucial local safety net for communities and businesses that have actively participated and are on track to finish. Current estimates suggest we could add between 600 and 800 MW by the end of the year.”
Boiko emphasized that this capacity, while valuable, would primarily support localized power needs rather than covering the entire country’s requirements under all circumstances.
“This amount is neither insignificant nor excessive. For the country as a whole, it doesn’t fully secure our ability to promise uninterrupted electricity in scenarios like intensified shelling. Yet, for those areas that have managed to implement these projects, it will provide a reliable power supply under almost any condition,” he noted.
Looking ahead, Boiko projected a sharp increase in distributed generation projects next year, with anticipated results that will significantly exceed this year’s achievements.
