Ukraine’s ‘borscht index’ signals 5-7% rise in staple food prices as cold weather sets in, agrarian council says

The Ukrainian Agri Council expects higher costs for the so-called “borscht index”, a measure that tracks the price of staple vegetables used in national beetroot soup. Vegetable sales are currently at their peak, but households should consider stocking up before prices increase in October, Denys Marchuk, deputy chairman of the council, said at a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.

“When the real frosts begin, producers will set a certain price for storage services, so vegetable prices will rise. The price of vegetables in the ‘borscht set’ may increase by 5-7%. This is provided that the electricity supply remains stable. The enemy is targeting critical infrastructure, which could make products even more expensive,” Marchuk said.
