Ukraine Numbers About 250,000 Residents with HIV; 90,000 of Them Do Not Know About Their Status and Are a Source of Infection — AHF in Ukraine
About 90,000 residents of Ukraine who have HIV do not know about their status — this is why the epidemic of this infection continues. Yaroslava Lopatina, Country Program Director for AHF in Ukraine, told this during the briefing in Media Center Ukraine — Ukrinform.
“According to estimates, Ukraine numbers about 250,000 residents with HIV. But only 123,000 people, those who receive treatment, are under medical supervision. About 90,000 people still do not know about their HIV status, about their HIV infection, so they are the source of infection that renders overcoming the epidemic impossible. And this is the reason for the continuing epidemic. In order to overcome the epidemic in Ukraine, it is required to detect these people, identify HIV infection and make sure that they start treatment. Because as soon as a person starts treating HIV infection, it ceases to be a source of infection for other people,” the expert noted.
