Ukraine launches program to train adaptive sports coaches for veterans
Ukraine has introduced a new comprehensive cross-sector training program for coaches in adaptive sport for veterans and active service members, aiming to support physical and emotional rehabilitation.
The initiative marks a major step toward building a nationwide network of professionals who help veterans reintegrate into civilian life or recover before returning to duty.
Developed by Centre for Strategic Communications StratCom Ukraine and Invictus Games, the program was created in partnership with the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine and the IREX Veterans Reintegration Program.
The first round of training has already taken place, with 145 coaches taking part and 34 earning full certification after finishing the extended version of the course.
Deputy Minister for Veterans Affairs Ruslan Prykhodko emphasized that developing a full-fledged ecosystem around veteran sports requires specially trained coaches and rehabilitation experts.
“The demand for such programs is enormous,” Prykhodko said. “As a state, we make veterans’ sports part of national policy. It should be a comprehensive system that serves our defenders, supports their physical and mental health, and promotes a culture of respect for veterans throughout society.”
He added that similar training programs will eventually be incorporated into all national sports initiatives, with a focus on working effectively with veterans.
Vira Pasishniuk, head of veteran projects at StratCom Ukraine, coordinator for the Invictus Games in Ukraine, explained that the first training program targeted coaches who already work with veterans and active service members.
“The program pursues two key goals: integrating male and female veterans into sports and training local male and female coaches through on-site practice,” Pasishniuk said. “It includes lectures on adaptive sports and a hands-on segment, where coaches practice with veterans using adaptive equipment.”
Yana Voitovska, head of the IREX Veteran Reintegration Program, noted that research by the organization shows veterans consistently rank sports among the top three methods aiding their recovery and rehabilitation.
