Ukraine launches free health exams for adults 40+ targeting heart disease, diabetes risks
A nationwide health examination initiative aimed at encouraging Ukrainians in their 40s and up to prioritize their well-being kicked off on January 1. The program’s primary objective is to prompt people to address potential issues before they escalate into strokes, heart attacks, diabetes, or related complications. The Health Ministry seeks to help individuals identify health risks early and learn effective ways to mitigate them. Currently, diabetes accounts for 60 percent of deaths in Ukraine, while cardiovascular diseases are responsible for 80 percent of all disability cases.
Health Minister Viktor Liashko highlighted the effort during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.
“As a state, we are interested in detecting certain diseases earlier, treating them more easily, and keeping people actively healthy for longer. The second issue is motivating people to identify risks on time, take care of their health, and manage it. Based on the screening results, people can consult a doctor, get prescriptions for free medicines under the Affordable Medicines program, and take advantage of a set of solutions called Healthy Heart. This includes heart surgery, bypass surgery, and stenting, all completely free of charge,” he said.
As a reminder, Ukraine’s National Health Screening 40+ program, launched January 1, focuses on early detection of cardiovascular issues, diabetes, and mental health concerns. All people aged 40 and older can undergo the free examinations at both public and private medical facilities.
