Ukraine has stockpiled enough gas and coal for winter, an energy official says
Ukraine has secured sufficient reserves of gas and coal to make it through the coming winter, despite continued russian strikes on energy facilities, a senior Ukrenergo official said.
Yurii Boiko, a member of the supervisory board of the national grid operator, told a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine that the country’s ability to endure the cold season depends on two factors, adequate reserves and stable domestic production, which must remain steady and uninterrupted by attacks.
“When russia launched massive attacks on our gas production and processing facilities, we faced the need to establish imports to replace domestic resources. Today, our gas reserves are strong, more than sufficient for a typical winter. However, in the context of the war, there remains a risk that we may need to purchase additional volumes,” he noted.
The outlook for coal is comparable, Boiko said.
“Currently, power plants hold about 2,000 tons of coal in their warehouses. This is enough for two months of winter operations, but it represents the maximum amount the plants can store. Considering that the key coal supplier is the Pavlohrad region, which is also under regular shelling, we must be aware that if the situation deteriorates, we have to turn to imports,” he explained.
