Ukraine border used as leverage against Polish authorities, Border Guard Service says
The recent blockade of a Medyka-Shehyni checkpoint on the Ukrainian-Polish border had little to do with Ukraine itself and was instead used as a tool to pressure the Polish government, according to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.
Andrii Demchenko, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Border Guard Service, explained this during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.
“Several days ago, truck traffic was halted at the Medyka border crossing on the Polish side, known as Shehyni on our side,” Demchenko said. “Polish farmers positioned themselves at a distance from the border, along the road leading to it, effectively blocking the passage of trucks. Fortunately, the disruption was brief, and we remain hopeful that such actions will not be repeated.”
He emphasized that the farmers’ demands were unrelated to Ukraine. “If we analyze their grievances directed at Polish government agencies, it becomes clear that they focused on issues like tax reductions and the potential for Poland to sign agreements with other countries. In reality, the border with Ukraine was merely used as a lever to exert pressure on Polish authorities,” Demchenko concluded.
