“If Ukraine simply bans a certain church, it will lead to a lawsuit to the ECHR, shame and no results,” Poturaev

Mykyta Poturaiev, Chair of the Humanitarian and Information Policy Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine spoke about the prospects of the bill on improving the legal regulation of religious organizations’ activities in Ukraine at a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine — Ukrinform.

“I have a positive attitude, because there was a decision by the National Security and Defense Council, there was a corresponding address of the President, we see the Security Service of Ukraine handle these issues really well. But I want to point out that this question is not as simple as it seems. There is a very widespread opinion in the society: let’s ban a certain church! We, as a European country, and even more so as a country that wants to start membership negotiations, cannot do this. Because it will mean that we will receive a lawsuit in the European Court of Human Rights, we are guaranteed to lose this case, and we will be shamed as a state and society, this is my first point. And secondly, we will not achieve the result. Therefore, everything must be done in an intelligent, wise and reasonable manner,” — Poturaiev noted.
