Total annual harvest may fall short of expectations – Dmytro Solomchuk
As of August 1, Ukraine has harvested over 23 million tons of crops. However, preliminary estimates suggest that approximately 29 million tons of early crops were expected to be gathered by this time. In addition, the total annual harvest may fall short of expected results.
Dmytro Solomchuk, People’s Deputy of Ukraine, member of Verkhovna Rada’s Agrarian and Land Policy Committee made this statement during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine.
“To date, over 23 million tons of crops have been harvested. It is clear that expectations were a little higher in the spring. According to my calculations, there should be 28-29 million tons of early crops as of August 1. But let’s take into account the fact that the southern and eastern regions of the country experienced a three-month drought, and in parts of Sumy, Kharkiv and Zaporizhia regions as well as other oblasts wheat yields were as low as 1.8-2 tons per hectare, which is very little. In the western regions, these indicators are much better. In Rivne, Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Lviv oblasts, agrarians collected 6.5 to 9 tons of wheat per hectare. These are average indicators, depending on the quality of the land,” noted Dmytro Solomchuk.
He noted that the total annual harvest may fall short of expected results.
“In my opinion, the total annual harvest will fall short of expectations. Because we also see southern and eastern regions losing a lot of sunflower and corn,” he added.
