There are over 61,000 orphans and children deprived of parental care in Ukraine, more than 3,000 of whom are in institutional care

As of the end of 2024, Ukraine had over 61,000 children who were either orphaned or deprived of parental care. Of these children, approximately 3,242 remained in institutional care facilities.

Mariia Sakuta, Director General of the Directorate for Overcoming Difficult Life Circumstances at the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine shared this information during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.

”By the end of 2024, Ukraine had over 61,000 orphans and children deprived of parental care. Of these, approximately 3,242 children were in institutional care facilities. And this is actually a considerable number of children who will need further socialization and support after leaving institutional care. And very often they don’t find such support from adults, they don’t have reliable adults to turn to. They may also not have the level of trust in adults needed to share the issues troubling them,” she noted.
