The UN report indicates that 90% of Ukrainian POWs in russian captivity are subjected to torture, but the actual number may be even higher – MIHR
Almost all Ukrainian POWs held by russia are subjected to various forms of torture.
Anna Rassamakhina, Head of the War and Justice Department at the MIHR, emphasized this during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.
“The scale is evident from the sheer number of prisoners who are being tortured. Simply put, it is all of them. As noted in the widely cited 2023 UN report, 90% of Ukrainian POWs in russian captivity are subjected to various forms of torture. In my opinion, even this figure is somewhat underestimated,” Rassamakhina said.
According to her, torture and cruel treatment are documented in all places where prisoners of war are held in russia.
“It is impossible to find a prisoner of war who has not been subjected to torture or cruel treatment. And this happens, as has been repeatedly stated today, in all places where prisoners of war are held,” she stressed.
Anna Rassamakhina also added that there are currently no known examples of Ukrainian prisoners of war being held in accordance with the norms of international humanitarian law.
“We are not aware of any exceptions. There may be places that are more brutal and others that are less brutal, but there is never a place of detention that meets the requirements of the Geneva Convention and where prisoners of war are held in humane conditions,” Rassamakhina emphasized.
