The number of victims of conflict-related sexual violence may be ten times higher than official statistics
According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, as of today, 322 victims have come forward to participate in criminal proceedings and report conflict-related sexual violence. These include 207 women and 115 men. However, the actual number of victims could be ten times higher.
This was discussed during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.
According to Kateryna Levchenko, Government Commissioner for Gender Policy, the statistics may not fully reflect the actual number of victims of conflict-related sexual violence.
“In fact, the statistics that we have, that law enforcement has – this is just the tip of the iceberg. The same goes for statistics from social services and NGOs. And we know that behind every identified case there are at least ten others that nobody knows about, that nobody talks about,” Levchenko stated.
