Ukraine’s energy situation remains tense, particularly in frontline regions such as southern Ukraine and the Kharkiv oblast. However, other parts of the country have a more stable energy system this summer than last.
Oleksandr Kharchenko, director of the Energy Industry Research Center, emphasized this during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.
“Overall, there are several regions where conditions are extremely difficult. This includes the Kherson and Mykolaiv oblasts, where the situation is consistently unstable, and the energy infrastructure in frontline areas has been almost completely destroyed. In Kherson, it’s easier to list what remains intact than what has been attacked since absolutely everything has been attacked. There are definitely regions where the situation is extremely difficult. This applies to the southern regions, the Kharkiv oblast, and the entire zone along the frontline,” Kharchenko noted.
At the same time, he emphasized that Ukraine’s energy system is much better prepared this summer than last. Key factors include more efficient planning of repair campaigns and active restoration of generating capacities.
“If we talk about other parts of Ukraine, we are entering this summer in a much better state than last year. In a radically better state. Much more capacity has been restored, and the approach to repair planning has improved significantly. Energoatom’s repair schedules for reactors have been greatly influenced by last year’s negative experience. This ensures that the situation will not reach a point where we would be at minimal power system capacity during peak heat. Work is ongoing, restoration continues, and new generating capacities are being built,” the expert added.
