The city of Dnipro was founded in the 16th century, not during the reign of russian Empress Catherine – historians

Ukrainian historians insist that Dnipro’s founding date should be officially revised. They argue that the city’s establishment can be traced back to the 16th century.

Viktor Brekhunenko, a professor and head of the Department of Act Archaeography at the M. S. Hrushevsky Institute of Ukrainian Archaeography and Source Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, made this statement during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.

“Logically, the city’s history should begin with the appearance of the first proto-settlements. The Dnipro City Council has every reason to redate the city’s founding to the early 16th century, when the first mentions of stations and a mooring place on the Samara River appeared, where a customs house operated and goods were transported,” Brekhunenko noted.

It is worth noting that the local authorities are awaiting scientific justification for changing the date and are not rushing to make an administrative decision.
