Surge in food safety incidents in Ukraine: Over 360 affected in Q1 2024 – Food Safety and Consumer Protection Service reports
Compared to the first quarter of 2023, there was a sharp rise in food-related incidents in the first quarter of 2024, with 366 cases of food poisoning recorded, including 141 children.
During a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine, Serhii Tkachuk, Head of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection, made this announcement.
“In the first quarter of 2023, there were 271 cases, including 141 children. This year, we’ve seen an alarming increase to 366 cases, with 176 of those affected being children. The figures clearly indicate a concerning upward trend,” he stated.
Tkachuk also pointed out an increase in incidents related to food thefts. He noted that both the number of victims and the investigations involving the service have risen. Factors contributing to the rise in food safety issues include abnormal weather conditions and ongoing challenges in the energy sector.
Additionally, the sale of perishable goods like meat, dairy, and rice at unregulated street markets, particularly during periods of high temperatures, has exacerbated the situation.
