Smoke in the capital: Ukrainian Meteorological Center explains the causes

Fires in several regions of the country, combined with a change in wind direction, have caused smoke in the capital.

This was reported by Nataliia Ptukha, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Meteorological Center, during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.

“We are still in the middle of the fire danger period, and in some places fires are still burning. Even when they are extinguished, smoke can still linger. The most notable case occurred on Friday when the wind direction changed. Previously, the wind was mainly from the east, but on Friday it shifted more to the north, to the northeast. And it was precisely from these regions – the northern parts of Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy regions – that smoke from the remnants of the fires, or sometimes from the fires themselves, reached Kyiv. We were caught in a smoke plume. Of course, it cannot be of the same intensity all the time, because our emergency crews are actively fighting it and localizing it as much as possible,” Nataliia Ptukha explained.
