Second-level power grid protection in Ukraine shows 98% effectiveness
Ukraine’s second-level defenses within its three-tier protective system for critical energy infrastructure have proven highly effective, with a 98% success rate in preventing damage from direct attacks.
Speaking at the Media Center Ukraine, Oleksandr Kharchenko, director of the Energy Industry Research Center, said the system has largely withstood assaults on key facilities. “Where there is second-level protection, which was built by Ukrenergo and the Agency for Restoration, as of October 15, out of 74 [protected] facilities, there is one destroyed autotransformer. There was a direct hit from a heavy rocket. That is, we can confirm 98% effectiveness of the second level of protection,” he noted.
Kharchenko also highlighted a case in which a single facility’s defenses were struck 13 times in one attack, yet continued to function, underscoring the robustness of the protective measures.
