russian troops in northern Ukraine’s Chernihiv region forcibly brought civilians from nearby areas, including Kyiv, into detention facilities, where many were tortured, a new study presented at Media Center Ukraine found.

Anastasiia Chupis, an international law expert and analyst, described the broader pattern of violence. “In addition to operating torture chambers, russian forces moving through villages on heavy equipment carried out indiscriminate shelling that killed a teenager. They also used incendiary munitions, which destroyed more than 60 homes,” Chupis said.

During the early stages of the war in 2022, russian troops occupying Chernihiv deliberately targeted water towers, looted shops and rural primary care outposts, leaving residents without access to water, food, and essential medicines.
