russia mobilized 600 residents from Ukraine’s occupied areas, human rights expert says

russia has conscripted at least 600 individuals from territories it temporarily controls during the fall and spring, according to a Ukrainian human rights activist.

During the all-out invasion of Ukraine, an estimated 55,000 people from occupied regions have joined the armed forces of the aggressor state.

Kateryna Rashevska, an expert at the Regional Human Rights Center NGO and a PhD in international law, shared this information at the Media Center Ukraine. 

“In the newly occupied territories, despite putin’s lies that there would be no conscription there until 2026, recruitment has been ongoing since the fall of 2024,” Rashevska said. “From the fall of 2024 through the spring of 2025, russia mobilized 600 people from occupied areas. Before the occupation, many of them were Ukrainian children.”
