russia may push to grant russian language co-official status, elections in Ukraine during prospective peace talks
russia is likely to press for official recognition of the russian language and for elections to be held in Ukraine as part of potential negotiations with the United States, according to Vadym Denysenko, head of the Dilova Stolytsia Analytical Center. He made the remarks during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.
“russia will demand that Ukraine amend its language and religious laws and designate russian as a second official language. This is an absolute red line for Ukrainian society. These are demands that Ukrainians will never accept,” Denysenko said.
He added that moscow is also expected to push for early elections in Ukraine. “We must remember that russia does not currently have its own candidate. Their main strategy will be to exploit the chaos of Ukraine’s internal processes. The maximum share of Ukrainians willing to vote for a russian-backed candidate would be around 10 to 15 percent,” he said.
