russia imposes single messaging app in temporarily occupied territories, severing communication with Ukraine
Communicating with people living under occupation is essential – now more than ever. These are Ukrainians suffering under russian rule. Independent media are doing their best to adapt to the occupiers’ ever-tightening restrictions, but the challenges keep growing. This concern was raised by Andrii Dikhtiarenko, a journalist, TV host, and editor-in-chief of Realna Hazeta (Luhansk), during the presentation of a Truth to Justice project study by Vitsche Berlin.
“A new challenge has emerged in the temporarily occupied territories – russia is forcing everyone to switch to a new messaging app called ‘Max’, modeled after China’s tightly controlled platforms. They want to funnel all social activity there. Do we have a response to this? How will we communicate with occupied territories if this happens?” Dikhtiarenko warned.
Experts stress that Ukraine must develop state-level strategies to ensure information continues reaching the temporarily occupied territories.
