russia earns about USD 11 billion a year from gas transit to Europe through Ukraine – Serhii Makohon
Ukraine continues to transit russian oil and gas to European countries, earning the aggressor country about USD 11 billion annually.
This was stated by Serhii Makohon, former CEO of Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine LLC (2019-2022), during a discussion at the Media Centre Ukraine.
“In the third year of the war, Ukraine continues to transit both oil and gas from the russian federation to European countries, and russia earns about USD 11 billion a year from this. russia earns about USD 6 billion selling oil transiting through Ukraine and USD 5 billion selling gas transiting through Ukrainian territory. Why we continue to do this now is unclear. But I had hoped that this gas transit contract would end this year and we would effectively stop it, because Europe is already prepared to live without russian gas. We know that the share of russian gas has dropped from 45% to 15% and our transit is only 5% of the total imports to the European Union. Therefore, our share is not very significant for Europe and it can manage without this russian gas transit. By stopping it, we could deprive russia of USD 5 billion in annual revenues,” Serhii Makohon explained.
