russia deported nearly 11,000 Ukrainian children to “re-education” camps in 2025 alone
russia continues to violate international law by erasing the national identity of Ukrainian children through forced “re-education” in camps.
Kseniya Kornienko, senior lawyer at the NGO “Regional Center for Human Rights”, stated this during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.
“Between 2023 and 2024, 102 cases of Ukrainian children being deported to camps were documented, with at least 8,270 children forcibly relocated. A total of 98 facilities on russian territory and in temporarily occupied territories were used to hold these children. In 2025 alone, russia has deported nearly 11,000 Ukrainian children to 164 institutions. At the same time, the programs in these camps have become increasingly militarized,” she said.
According to researchers, children abducted by russia suffer from lost connection syndrome, which is a deliberate strategy by the enemy to isolate them from their community. Since 2022, the forced “re-education” of Ukrainian children in these camps has been state policy in russia.
“The deportation of Ukrainian children under the guise of ‘re-education camps’ is a comprehensive and planned policy implemented by russia at multiple levels and coordinated by the russian government with direct support from putin. The goal of these ‘camps’ is re-education, militarization, and the destruction of national identity. We have observed this since 2014, but since 2022, it has become official state policy,” Kornienko emphasized.
Moreover, the aggressor justifies its actions by claiming that the Ukrainian army leaves them with no other choice but to deport Ukrainian children.
