Recent frosts have damaged crops in several regions
The recent drop in temperatures has already had a negative impact on crops in some regions of Ukraine. In particular, crops in Dnipropetrovsk oblast and parts of Cherkasy oblast have been affected. While it is still unclear how much damage the frost caused to the crops, it is certain that the final yields of some of the crops will be affected.
This was announced by Taras Vysotskyi, First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.
“If we look at the short-term frost that recently occurred, unfortunately it has already had a negative effect in certain regions, though not in all. For example, we have initial reports from Dnipropetrovsk oblast and part of Cherkasy oblast – the central and eastern parts of the country were affected by this cold wave. In areas where crops were in the active vegetative stage, such as barley or winter rapeseed, which is almost in full bloom, there have been negative consequences,” Vysotskyi noted.
It is not yet clear, he said, whether this will lead to a total loss of crops in the affected areas.
“Whether this will lead to the total loss of certain crops in these regions is still difficult to assess. What we do know is that vegetation has been temporarily stopped and plants have been weakened. But we need at least another week to understand whether the plants have enough energy to recover and continue growing,” the official said.
Preliminary estimates indicate that the frost will affect future yields, particularly barley and winter rapeseed. However, the full extent of the damage will only become clearer later.
“This frost will undoubtedly have a negative impact on final yields – obviously in these regions, for these crops, yields will not be at their maximum. But again, whether this means a total loss or just a certain reduction in yield is still hard to say,” Vysotskyi summarized.
