Peer-led psychological recovery groups should operate at the state level – civil society activists

The Public Organization “Psychability” works to provide greater support and improve the quality of life for individuals with mental health conditions and their families. Experience from many countries demonstrates that peer support groups are a powerful tool for rehabilitation and social integration. However, these groups require comprehensive state-level support programs to be sustainable and effective long-term. Kostiantyn Zelenov, a board member of “Psychability”, a psychiatrist at the Center for Emergency Medical Care and Disaster Medicine in Kyiv, and Master of Psychology, made this call to action at the Media Center Ukraine.

“What are the advantages of such groups? The approaches are adapted to the clients’ needs. Participants have the opportunity to be heard, express themselves without judgment, and care for one another in a safe environment,” he stated.

Zelenov emphasized that a key outcome of this work is restoring individuals’ mental well-being and successfully reintegrating them into family and society. The Public Organization “Psychability” already operates a peer support group that brings together individuals who have completed a case management program and those who are beginning their psycho-emotional recovery journey.
