Over 9,000 fires occurred in Ukraine last fall and winter – State Emergency Service
Last fall and winter, 9,296 fires broke out in residential buildings and structures, resulting in the deaths of 824 people.
This was reported by Oleksandr Chekryhin, Acting Director of the Emergency Prevention Department, during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.
“Last fall and winter, in 2023-2024, we had more than 9,000 fires that killed 824 people, including 23 children. In addition, 665 people were injured, including 65 children,” he said.
According to Chekryhin, nearly 3,000 fires were caused by malfunctions in electrical networks and appliances, including short circuits and careless use of electrical equipment. Over 2,600 fires were caused by violations of fire safety regulations in the use of heating stoves. Another 2,222 fires were caused by carelessness with fire, such as smoking in bed and using open flames in the home.
“We once again emphasize and warn against violating fire safety rules, as this can come at a very high cost in terms of life and health of our citizens,” he stressed.
