Orthodox Church of Ukraine confident that most Ukrainians will celebrate Christmas on December 25
The majority of Ukrainians will celebrate Christmas on December 25.
This belief was expressed by Heorhii Kovalenko, priest of the OCU, philosopher, Rector of the Open Orthodox University of Saint Sophia-Wisdom.
“I am confident that the majority, the absolute majority of Ukrainians will celebrate Christmas on December 25. There are no doubts or questions here. The whole world, including most of the Orthodox Churches around the world, celebrate Christmas on December 25. This is also, in a way, a tradition of the cultural and political space we are moving towards – the Western world. The Western world universally celebrates on December 25. On the other hand, it has also become a modern tradition associated with Christmas trees and Christmas markets, which often have non-religious roots. All this creates a festive atmosphere especially on December 25. It is very good that both the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church adopted this decision, which had been discussed for many years. Now there are no problems with it,” he said.
