Opuk Cape turned into artillery range as russia ravages Crimea’s environment, experts warn
russia is pressing ahead with large-scale infrastructure projects in Crimea without regard for environmental standards or the protection of natural reserves.
Yevhen Khlobystov, dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and coordinator of the CPEN working group on ecology and economics, underscored the point during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.
“Cape Opuk, a truly unique natural area, has been turned into an artillery training ground. We are also losing many other protected sites in Crimea because of uncontrolled development,” Khlobystov said.
Experts stressed that the reintegration of Crimea after its de-occupation will present not only a major economic task but also an enormous environmental challenge.
