No radiation threat: Expert assesses impact of enemy strike on Chornobyl NPP sarcophagus

A Russian attack drone strike caused partial damage to the shelter at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), but experts say it does not pose any radiation risk.

Oleksandr Kharchenko, director of the Energy Industry Research Center, addressed the incident during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine, confirming that while the structure sustained some damage, there is no threat of radiation exposure.

“At this moment, we have objective information and video footage of the incident. The facility has indeed suffered partial destruction, but it does not present any radiation hazards. Naturally, extensive work will be required to restore the sarcophagus. However, from a radiation safety perspective, there are no threats,” Kharchenko stated.

The attack occurred on February 14, when a Russian drone carrying an explosive warhead struck the shelter at the Chornobyl NPP. The impact took place near the New Safe Confinement, the protective structure covering the remains of the plant’s destroyed fourth reactor. The drone hit the roof of the containment facility.
