More arrivals to Ukraine before Christmas, more departures after Christmas and New Year – State Border Guard Service on holiday passenger traffic
The Christmas and New Year holiday period was characterized by dynamic passenger traffic at the border, with peak days reaching over 150,000 crossings per day, especially before Christmas. However, there were also days when traffic decreased significantly.
This was reported by Andrii Demchenko, spokesman for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.
“For example, on December 25, about 68,000 people crossed the border in both directions, while on January 1, the number was about 32,000. Overall, passenger traffic remained fairly high throughout the period and began to increase on December 14. Last weekend, daily crossings were between 105,000 and 110,000 in both directions. Before Christmas, there was a noticeable preference for travel to Ukraine. After Christmas and through the New Year, departures from Ukraine predominated. Recently, however, the balance has been more even, with no clear dominance of one direction over the other. Interestingly, on Sunday and Monday, 25,000 more Ukrainian citizens entered the country than left,” Demchenko said.
He also noted that 400,000 more people crossed the border in December than in November, with a total of 2.9 million border crossings recorded in December.
