Melania Trump’s letter to putin made no mention of Ukrainian children abducted by russia

Ukrainian officials had hoped the Trumps would urge vladimir putin to return children deported from Ukraine by russia. Instead, America’s first lady wrote to russia’s leader without referencing any specific children or mentioning Ukraine.

Kateryna Rashevska, a PhD in international law and an expert at the Regional Center for Human Rights, raised the issue during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.

“Melania Trump’s letter [to putin] was very maternal and heartfelt about the plight of children caught in armed conflict, but it said nothing about the children abducted by putin,” Rashevska said. “The problem isn’t the letter itself, but the expectations we placed on it. We hoped that if not the U.S. president, then at least his wife might appeal to putin to return the young Ukrainians.”
